Memories Of My Special Horse “Midnight” by Jeanette Cumming
Her name was Montego Midnight Dream. Midnight for short. She was born 9/9/97
She was registered Australian Appaloosa Association 58538 as well as Appaloosa Horse and Spotted pony society of Australia 2317
I found Midnight at 5 weeks of age at Montego Stud, and on the way home after buying her my girls and I were thinking of names to call her. I had this agreement with Tracy if she wasn’t what I wanted Tracy would have her. Yes it was dark when we were traveling home and would be a dream to own a black filly is how she got her name. We got the phone call to come get her when she was 4.5 months old, so off hubby and I went. I took one look at this poor little defenseless baby filly and I was in love. She was mine and no one else was having her. We got her home and wormed her, fed her up and before long she had settled in and started looking really nice and a bond was forming. We spent a lot of time together and I learnt Pat Parelli natural horsemanship with her. We would have fun playing and learning stuff. I could get her to put her hoof in a tyre at the end of a 12’ lead rope as well as going sideways, backwards, go in the float by herself while I sat on the mudguard.
We also did a lot of shows together and I can’t remember her ever not being placed. She has her bronze and silver register of merit in best blanket and High points for best blanket in years 98/99 99/2000 2000/2001 Appaloosa female in 98/99 2011/2012 and a few trophy’s.
By the time she was 2yo I had broken her in myself and could crack a stock whip of her. We could ride together with no halter or bridle bareback. We had our level one and libity in Parelli. We rode a lot on our farm working cattle and sheep.
When she was 6yo I decided to breed with her and over the coming years she produced 6 lovely foals 3 colts and 3 fillys . I have kept 2 fillys by her :Squirrel Creek Ima Nite Dream AAA61707 A&ASP A2822 and Squirrel Creek Midnite Ash A 2911
When I bought her back into work after this foaling period I joined the Port fairy riding group and Warrnambool trail riding group as well as riding with family and friends. We have been on beach rides, trail rides in the bush and camps out under the stars. We were really enjoying our rides together and I know she loved the beach and the bush and wasn’t scared of kangaroos. She would lead if others wouldn’t and she helped a lot with settling the nervous ones. Our biggest ride was the Great Western Ride 70 km over 2 days. She did this easy with plenty of enthusiasum. We had just done a parelli clinic where she stood on a truck tyre for me. She learnt to sidepass towards me as well. I will never forget my beautiful appaloosa mare Midnight and the fun we shared in her 16 years with me. She passed away on Valentines day 2014
